Reflection of Service Learning 2/19/09

1.) Yesterday was service learning and I was absent sorry to say but I have obtained some information from others in the group. They talked about one of our events: the Walk-A-Thon. 

• Lakeisha was filling out the paper work for the grant to hold our Walk a Thon and permit to sell things, while Aquila called the art museum to ask if it was okay to host our Walk-A-Thon in that area then she was told to call the Fairmount Park Comission. 
  

• Mr. Brasof talked to the documentary group about their change of plans they were originally making a documentary but instead they are doing a powerpoint presentation because some members of that mini group feel as tho they are the only ones who do the work.
  

2.) And Georgia has decided to make others aware of the event by forming press releases and going to class to class speaking on the topic. 

• Since I was absent its not much really to talk about and my group didn't elaborate on the whole service learning because they had work to do so instead I will talk about previous topics that have occured within our service learning group. We have came up with many suggestions and ideas . 

• We planned and planned but we have not really accomplished none of our goals I think our topic is such a broad topic that sometimes its hard to reach certain goals because of the lack of support and people who are aware of the conflict in Darfur. For an Example, We had decided to have a flip flop drive but that paln has been delayed because we still need some one that could get these flip flops to the people in Darfur who needs them.

The Genocide 

how it started?

Violence erupted in western Sudan's Durfur region in 2003 when rebels began attacking government targets the impoverished territory was neglected. The rebels claimed that black africans were being favored of ethnic Arab groups. The government retailiated resulting in violence that has led displacement of millions of ppl and deaths of thousands. 

Who is involved?

The 2 rebel groups are:The Sudan Liberation Army and the Justice and Equality Movement who were initially involved 

Who is affected?

 In 5 yrs of conflict, the United Nation says 300,000 ppl have been killed in the violence. At least 2.5 million have been forced from their homes or fled to displacement camps others suffered from the violence including rape and appalling conditions.

What is being done? 

At Constitution High a dedicated group of students including a teacher is trying to better the peoples' conditions in Darfur by promoting a Walk- A- Thon, buying T- shirts and bands to raise awareness and also going to other schools to reach out for more support. Other ideas we came up with in our group is a flip flop drive because we realized that many of the citizens there do not have durable shoes or are bare footed. We will continue to come up with other plans to help them but FIRST WE NEED YOUR HELP! So come out in join our group to change lives.
